What happens if you run out of cards?
If you run out of cards, draw 5 cards at the beginning of your next turn instead of the usual 2.
Who goes first / who starts the game?
The rules for determining the first player are flexible and can be decided in various ways. If it’s a second game, the winner of the previous game draws first.
Here are common methods of deciding who goes first during the first game:
Random Selection: Players can randomly choose who goes first by drawing cards. The player who draws the highest-value card starts the game. Alternatively, players can roll a die, and the highest roller goes first.
Youngest Player: Some groups prefer to have the youngest player start the game.
House Rule: Players can agree on any method they prefer to determine who goes first, such as the winner of a previous game or the player who last touched a Monopoly board game.
Once the first player is chosen, play proceeds clockwise around the table.
Is Monopoly Deal a ‘take that’ game?
Monopoly Deal isn’t considered a pure “take that” game.
While there are action cards that can disrupt other players’ plans (like forcing trades or stealing properties), the core gameplay focuses on acquiring properties and building sets for yourself. Take-that games typically emphasize directly hindering opponents, whereas Monopoly Deal is more about building your own economic engine.
That being said, there can definitely be some player interaction and opportunities to mess with your opponents. So, it has some elements of take-that, but it’s not the main focus.

Payment & Rent FAQs

When a player demands rent using a Rent card or an Action card like “It’s My Birthday,” you must pay them using the cards in your bank, including money and action cards that you placed in your bank to be used as money. Yes. Players can choose how they prefer to pay. (Official source)

House & Hotel FAQs
What is the purpose of the House and Hotel cards?
Houses and hotels increase the rent value of your completed property sets. Each set can have one house and one hotel.
How do you add houses and hotels to a property set?
You can add houses and hotels to a property set once you have a complete set of properties of the same color. You play these cards from your hand to the property set in front of you, during your turn. Each house or hotel you play, counts as one of your three plays during your turn.
How many houses and hotels can you add to a property set?
Each property set can only have one house and one hotel.
Can you place a hotel without having a house first?
No, you must have a house on a complete property set before you can place a hotel. You cannot skip directly to placing a hotel.
Can houses and/or hotels be moved between sets?
If you have two full property sets, you can move a house or hotel between them during your turn only. This does not count as one of your plays. (Official source)
Can houses and hotels be used to pay a debt?
Yes, you can pay them in property from your table, but not from your hand. If you pay using a property from a property set that includes a house and/or hotel, the house and/or hotel will become inactive if you have no other complete property set where you can place them. They can remain placed on the table in front of you if inactive, but they can’t be used to collect rent. Only when you complete a property set once more, can they be used as a house or hotel on that property set. They do not necessarily have to be placed on the same property set that was used previously. You can only move an inactive house and/or hotel during your turn, and it does not count as one of your plays.
Can houses and hotels be added to railroads or utilities?
House and hotel cards may not be added to Railroads or Utilities.
Can a house or hotel be added to your bank as cash?
House and hotel cards are action cards with a monetary value, so they can be used as cash and placed in your bank. If you bank a house or hotel to be used as money, it will remain as money in the recipients bank. They cannot be used in a property set anymore.
If I was paid using a house or hotel, do I bank the house or hotel or do I have to place it on a property set? What if I don’t have a full property set?
Houses or hotels cannot be banked as money if they were part of a property set where you were paid from. If you were paid with a house or hotel that was used as money from an opponents bank, they will be placed in your bank, remaining as money. If you don’t have a full property set and you receive a house or hotel as payment, they will remain on your table as inactive. When you complete a full property set you can add them during your turn to that set. This does not count as one of your plays.
I had to break up a property set that contained a house or house and hotel. Can they be reattached to a new completed color set?
Yes, during your turn only. (Official source)
